Teach children how and when to dial 911
Have a code word to use with your kids, family and friends. They will know to call the police and get you help.
Remember there is always someone who can help you. You are never alone.
Know the quickest route out of your home or workplace. Domestic Violence does not just occur in your home.
Have a set location to go to. This location should be secret. (This can be a friend’s or a relatives’ home that he does not know where they live, a motel or shelter)
Tell your neighbours about your abuse and ask them to call the police when they hear a disturbance.
Cell phone should be with you at all times if possible.
Set aside money, gather and store important documents. (copies of important information like birth certificates, medical and school records to be kept in a safe place such as with family or friends.)
Have a list of important phone numbers; such as police, shelter, counsellors, relatives, or friends.
A bag packed with clothes, money, spare keys, IDs
Move to a room with easy access to an exit. Don’t go into the kitchen, bathroom, or near possible weapons.

Report to doctor or lawyer and keep record of threats made toward you.

o Leave a copy of the protection order at your child’s school and your friends and family
o Keep a log every time your abuser contacts you
o Keep a cell phone with you at all times. Even cell phones without service can call 911
o If your abuser violates the protection order, call the police immediately.
o Do not talk with your abuser or let him in the home
o You can go to court and ask for an order to show cause if he continually violates the order
