Safety Planning

Create a Safety Plan that works for you

Your number one priority should be your own safety

If you are in a violent relationship, safety should be your first concern. For more assistance in developing a personal safety plan, or a plan to leave, please call our crisis line.

You have a right to protect yourself and your child(ren)

Teach children how and when to dial 911

Have a code word to use with your kids, family and friends. They will know to call the police and get you help.

Remember there is always someone who can help you. You are never alone.

Plan out each step

Know the quickest route out of your home or workplace. Domestic Violence does not just occur in your home.

Have a set location to go to. This location should be secret. (This can be a friend’s or a relatives’ home that he does not know where they live, a motel or shelter)

Tell your neighbours about your abuse and ask them to call the police when they hear a disturbance.

Prepare items

Cell phone should be with you at all times if possible.

Set aside money, gather and store important documents. (copies of important information like birth certificates, medical and school records to be kept in a safe place such as with family or friends.)

Have a list of important phone numbers; such as police, shelter, counsellors, relatives, or friends.

Pack belongings

A bag packed with clothes, money, spare keys, IDs

Do not get trapped, practice escape routes in emergency

Move to a room with easy access to an exit. Don’t go into the kitchen, bathroom, or near possible weapons.

Local emergency numbers

RCMP (Portage La Prairie Detachment): (204) 857-4445

After hours: (204) 857-8767

Document and/or report

Report to doctor or lawyer and keep record of threats made toward you.
